The audio portion of my performance piece, Piano Player. I was given a piano by the city of Fort Lauderdale in 2013 to make into a public art work. Visually, I painted the piano a pale pink and collaged it with paper pieces of human flesh. The front legs were replaced by female mannequin legs. My piano travelled to a few different locations around Ft. Lauderdale, until being vandalized at one location, and then finally stolen from the next. The final recording was done on a different piano.
The first movement of the piece consists of a locked piano, forcing me to 'play' the piano via alternative means utilizing drum sticks, cymbals, and electric drill.
The second movement took place the night the piano was decorated. The key cover was unlocked and I performed in collaboration with Raphael Alvarez. Rhythmic, percussive playing mixed with minimal piano playing.
The third movement consists of one loop which is phased and layered over time. I recorded a full reel of improvised piano, which I then used to wrap the piano. During the final performance, i cut loops of tape at random and strung them across 3 different tape machines.
